A well-heeled crowd including fashion designers and models both past and present flocked to Christie's on Friday night for One Frickin Day's Charity Buzz kick-off event, putting models' old dresses on the block. The proceeds of the auction will go to hospitals in Haiti and Rwanda, helping them plug into solar power so they can heal the wounded.
Elettra Wiedemann looked ravishing in her sparkling Louboutins -- she and her dapper boyfriend James Marshall spearheaded this particular project, devoting two years' time, far beyond the charity's one-day philosophy, to help the sick. One Fricking Day started because Elettra wants to encourage more people to do less. The idea is simple: if everyone donated one day, and wasn't pressured to do more, big things will happen.
So with that in mind, supermodel Iman donated a Ralph Lauren dress she wore to the 2009 GQ Magazine Ball. I had a few moments with Bibhu Mohapatra. A J. Mendel dress crafted under his direction, and worn by Heidi Klum to the 2006 CFDA Awards, was up for bid.
Prabal Gurung gave away tickets to his show, and his package quickly outbid Jason Wu's, both Michelle Obama favorites. Adam Lippes looked great and I said hi, then moved on to hit on a Vogue writer's boyfriend. Richie Rich, even though he was on the initial press release, couldn't be there because he was making glittering t-shirts at the King Collective pop-up store downtown. When I ran into him later he was excited to hear about the event.
With the backdrop of Latin Master paintings awaiting an upcoming auction, the stunning crowd nibbled on garlic shrimp and tapas. The sheer trend has caught on and a few of the gorgeous showed off their black under-things, although quite discreetly. This was a place where all the men wear blazers and all the women read the glossy mags.
I also found out that luxury is quite alive, although drastically smaller and more incestuous than ever. Someone was telling me about a start-up where the fabulously rich who travel a lot can live in an apartment and have all the amenities of a hotel...while models who made their money strutting on the catwalks of yesteryear are out to save the world. One day at a time.
